Week 5: Healthcare Seminar
Main Theme In the healthcare seminar, we learned basic principles for treating and caring for people in developing contexts. We were given helpful tools to be able to identify some common health problems and some simple ways to address them ourselves and warning signs for when they would need more professional help. As Christians, we won't only deal on a physical level, but we are able to pray into spiritual causes of sickness and mental disease, which is a holistic approach to bringing health and healing to people. We also talked about the importance of listening to people and the profound effect that can have on a person's body, mind and spirit. Some Key Ideas…
The physical and the spiritual are incredibly connected. Life begins in the spiritual, with flows over in soul life and then into physical life.
The deeper you go incarnationally with the people, the deeper you must be in your fellowship with God.
Alarm Symptoms: If you see any of these we have a duty of care to seek further medical treatment.
In a developing context, management is more important than accurate diagnosis.
God loves to work in teams to do big things that we would never believe possible.
We must learn to "Face the data" and look at the truth of what is going on and bring that problem before God to get His creative solutions.
It is important for us to enjoy the journey that God is taking us on and not only focus on the destination.
Some things we learned… Tim - I learned so much about really tangible ways to help others who are struggling with health issues as well as praying into the source of those issues and getting God's solutions. I felt like the area of health was really opened up to me. I also learned to a greater degree how much the Bible has to say about the physical world and our bodies. God desires us to search the scriptures and discover the hidden wisdom in His Word and when we do this with the help of the Holy Spirit, He will reveal deep treasures that deal very practically with the real world that we live in. Eliza - I was struck again by the depth of wisdom and knowledge found in the Word of God in relation to science and healthcare. There is so much more in the Word that we have yet to discover! I was also reminded of the great need for people to be heard and cared for, not just have their conditions ‘treated’. Through class time and other interaction with the speaker both Tim and I were greatly encouraged to develop and nourish our spiritual lives and build routines that would help us to adapt to change. Realising how change and stress affects our body, soul and spirit and looking at ways to care for ourselves, wherever God takes us, whatever the season, is a very important application to our lives.
